School Law

“...the fate of empires depends on the education of youth.” —Aristotle

Our law firm has been dedicated to representing the educators of youth for over 30 years. We serve as general counsel and litigation counsel to almost 100 school districts – large urban and suburban districts as well as rural districts throughout the state.

We are committed to unsurpassed legal services, whether related to personnel matters, collective bargaining, student rights and responsibilities, special education, school operations, public records, contracting, real property, construction, or constitutional matters.

We are aware of the financial, political, social, and practical issues faced by our school district clients and help them identify matters that should be resolved short of costly litigation. We listen to our clients and pay close attention to their needs. We provide practical, honest advice and encourage our clients to strategize for the long-term as well as the short-term. Overall, we try to be insightful, creative, deliberate, forthcoming, and, above all, sensitive to our clients’ needs.

Litigation

With litigation, results matter. We are seasoned litigators with a clear understanding of our clients’ paramount need to protect the public trust.

Indeed, our lawyers have experience serving as litigation counsel to school districts and their insurers for well-over a quarter of a century.  We have a long history of successful, practical results in all types of litigation, including employee discharge and discipline cases, arbitrations, employment discrimination matters, liability/negligence claims, contract breach actions, and alleged statutory violation cases.

Municipal Law

Our lawyers have unique expertise helping public officials navigate the often imprecise and sometimes burdensome laws imposed on government agencies. We can help all types of public entities such as cities, towns, and special purpose districts through the briar patch of laws and regulations. The legal services we provide are varied, and include general counsel advice and litigation services relating to open public meeting laws, the public records act, and public employee matters (including public labor law and litigation before the Public Employment Relations Commission).

The sheer number of laws regulating governmental entities is daunting. Having wise, intelligent, and experienced legal counsel to assist the governing team is vital to the success of public servants and the agencies they serve.

“There’s a reason Stevens | Clay is one of the oldest, most experienced municipal law firms in Washington… they solve problems… the legal and political problems faced by public servants.”
